Why Rising Seniors Should Start Working on the College Application Process Over the Summer.

For rising seniors, the impending college application process can feel overwhelming and intimidating. However, by taking advantage of the summer months, students can gain a significant head start, reducing stress levels and ensuring a smoother transition into their final year of high school.

6 Reasons to Start Your College Application Work Over the Summer:

#1 - Minimize Stress and Maximize Productivity

The senior year of high school is notorious for its demanding workload, including challenging coursework, extracurricular commitments, and college application deadlines. By dedicating time to the college application process over the summer, rising seniors can alleviate some of the pressure that typically builds up during the fall semester. This proactive approach allows students to focus more effectively on their academics, extracurricular activities, and personal growth.

#2 - Ensure a Balanced College List

Choosing the right colleges to apply to can be challenging, but with early preparation, students can develop a well-rounded and balanced college list, ensuring multiple acceptances and maximizing merit awards. In my Summer College Application Bootcamp, I will teach rising seniors about different factors to consider, such as academic fit, campus culture, financial aid opportunities, and location preferences. By starting this process early, students have sufficient time to research and visit potential institutions, ensuring that they make informed decisions well in advance of fall deadlines.

#3 - Explore Majors and Career Paths

Many students enter their senior year with uncertainties about their intended major or career path. The summer months provide an excellent opportunity to delve into research, internships, and other experiential learning opportunities. The Write Path’s Summer College Application Bootcamp will provide a guide to help students explore different majors and career options, helping them make more informed decisions. By proactively engaging in this process, rising seniors can align their interests, skills, and aspirations with their college choices, ultimately leading to a more fulfilling and successful college journey.

#4 - Craft an Outstanding Personal Statement

The personal statement is a crucial component of the college application process, as it provides an opportunity for students to showcase their unique qualities, experiences, and aspirations. Writing an exceptional personal statement takes time, introspection, and many revisions. Starting this task over the summer allows rising seniors to reflect on their accomplishments, passions, and future goals without the added pressure of impending deadlines. It also provides them with ample opportunity to seek feedback from teachers, mentors, and counselors, resulting in a stronger, more polished essay.

#5 - Master the Common Application

The Common Application, often referred to as the "Common App," is a widely used platform that allows students to apply to multiple colleges and universities simultaneously. It is one of the few “known entities” that won’t change. Therefore, starting the Common App during the summer break enables students to become familiar with the system, explore the various sections, and gather necessary information such as personal details, transcripts, and recommendation letters. By completing these preliminary steps ahead of time, students will have a smoother experience when finalizing their applications later in the year.

#6 - Learn Key Application Components and Strategies

Today’s college application process is, in a word, confusing. The Summer College Application Bootcamp allows students to gain a comprehensive understanding of the various components that comprise a strong college application. We will cover everything from recommendation letters and supplemental essays to standardized tests, self-reported grades and extracurricular activities. We also cover application strategies, timing of application deadlines, and time management.
